Ultrasound & NDT

Get an overview of the capabilities for modeling the propagation of acoustic waves in coupled fluid and solid media in the COMSOL® software. The applications include nondestructive testing (NDT) units, flowmeters, and piezoelectric transducers.

Tech Café: Parameter Estimation & Material Properties

High-fidelity numerical simulations are only achieved if material properties are well described. In acoustics, knowing the damping properties of fluids and structures can be challenging. For porous materials, the challenge may be even higher, as data provided by manufacturers is often sparse. Using COMSOL Multiphysics®, it is possible to estimate your material parameters from experimental measurements through optimization. Moreover, the properties of any gas mixture, like moist air, can be computed from first principles with thermodynamics.

Parallel Session

Acoustic propagation in structures with submillimeter features is the norm in consumer products like mobile devices, protective grills of loudspeakers, hearing aids, and perforates used in muffler systems. Common to all is that the inclusion of thermoviscous losses is essential to correctly predict the response. You will be introduced to the modeling techniques used to capture these effects in simulations.

Tech Café: Solving Large Acoustics Models

When solving large acoustics models, it can be beneficial to tune the solvers for performance, stability, or memory consumption. This can, in many cases, be achieved using one of the predefined solver suggestions. The mesh and other options are also important. During this Tech Café, you can discuss how best to set up the solver configuration for your application with COMSOL engineers, who will also be answering your specific questions.

Anthony Bonomo
Naval Surface Warfare Center
Anthony Bonomo currently serves as the computational and structural acoustics specialist for the Acoustic Signatures Technology Division (Division 72) at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division. He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2012 with degrees in mechanical engineering and jazz studies. While at Maryland, Anthony participated in the NREIP program and completed two summer internships working on structural acoustics projects at Carderock. These internship experiences led him to pursue graduate studies in acoustics at The University of Texas at Austin as a participant in the SMART Scholarship program, with Carderock as his sponsoring facility. At UT, Anthony conducted research in computational underwater acoustics at the Applied Research Laboratories, culminating in a master's degree awarded in 2014 and a doctor of philosophy in 2017. Anthony returned to Carderock as a full-time employee in January 2018. For the past two and a half years, he has been working toward improving the numerical methods employed by Division 72 and has worked on projects across the division.
Tim Whitwell
Tectonic Audio Labs
Tim Whitwell is a physicist and acoustic engineer with over 20 years of experience in loudspeaker research and development as well as transducer and system design. He specializes in electro-acoustic design, simulation, and measurement; electromagnetic and multiphysics finite element analysis; distributed mode loudspeaker (DML) design; balanced mode radiator (BMR) design; laser vibrometry; and audio system tuning. His designs have sold in the hundreds of millions and won many prestigious awards, including What Hi-Fi Product of the Year (twice). Furthermore, Tim is the cited inventor on a number of technology and audio patents.
Patrick Dennis
Nissan Technical Center N.A.
Patrick Dennis has been a principal engineer for acoustics at Nissan since 2015. He worked at Ford/Visteon for 13 years, where he held various positions in audio from competitive analysis to speaker engineering to audio system acoustics design. For 15 years and counting, he has been responsible at Nissan for audio and Bluetooth® hands-free sound quality as well as voice recognition testing (including environmental – mic packaging/placement in cabins and road noise effects). He is also responsible for test method development.

COMSOL Speakers

Jeanette Littmarck
Jeanette Littmarck has 25 years of sales experience at COMSOL and is the sales director for government accounts in Washington, D.C.; Maryland; Alabama; and Virginia. She joined COMSOL AB in Sweden in 1992 and became the first sales representative for all Scandinavian customers before moving to the Burlington office in 2000.
Mads J. Herring Jensen
Mads Herring Jensen joined COMSOL in 2011 and is the technical product manager for the Acoustics Module. Before starting at COMSOL, he worked in the hearing aid industry for five years as an acoustic finite element expert. Mads has a PhD in computational fluid dynamics from the Technical University of Denmark.
Phil Kinnane
Phil Kinnane is the VP of sales at COMSOL, Inc. He has previously worked within the Business Development, Operations, and Marketing departments. Phil has 20 years of experience with modeling and simulation for all fields of engineering. He earned his PhD in electrochemical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.
Kirill Shaposhnikov
Kirill Shaposhnikov works at COMSOL as a development engineer in the acoustics group. He has a degree in applied mathematics from South-Russian State Polytechnic University and a PhD in mechanical engineering from the Vienna University of Technology. His interests focus on applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and numerical analysis.
Yeswanth Rao
Yeswanth Rao is a senior applications engineer and has been with COMSOL since early 2008. He holds a PhD in biological engineering and a master's degree in electrical engineering. His finite element background is in MEMS, particularly piezoelectric modeling.
Jinlan Huang
Jinlan Huang is an applications engineer for vibrations and acoustics and instructs acoustics and heat transfer training courses. She received her PhD from Boston University, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, investigating acoustic wave propagation in complex-tissue environments and ultrasound-induced tissue heating and bleeding control. She joined COMSOL in 2011.
