How exactly is element quality calculated?

Hi,

the only information I can find in the docs about element quality is:

"The quality of an element is a double between 0 and 1, where 0.0 represents a
degenerated element and 1.0 represents a completely symmetric element"

Well - but what exactly is the formula that is used to determine element quality for triangular/quadrilateral elements in 2D/3D?
